HEALING THE SOIL – HEALING THE EARTH

High in the mountains above Boulder, Colorado, a garden thrives – flowers blossom, elderberries turn deep purple, delicious tomatoes load down the vines. In downtown Boulder, an avid rose gardener admires her fragrant blooms. In Alaska, the vegetables reach record size, yet taste sweeter and provide more nutrition than ever.

The secret is not a new fertilizer – there are no chemicals being spread on the land. Indeed, a quiet revolution in soil care and agriculture is taking place – the next chapter beyond simple organic gardening. Not only are the plants healthier, but the very soil is being healed.

The healing results from a compost tea system, developed in Alaska and Boulder by Soil Health Solutions. The company was started by two brothers, John and Roland Evans, whose family has been gardening for five generations. Their father, at age 93, still works two acres of exceptional garden in Ireland using the system.

John Evans, winner of innumerable gardening records and awards, created the Bountea Compost Tea system. Living humus, special additives, air and water are combined to produce a liquid which is teeming with microorganisms. When sprayed on the earth and plants, the compost tea fosters a unique micro-ecology. The soil becomes alive with beneficial microbes that help plants naturally take up nutrients and fight disease. These organisms reduce the need for compost and fertilizers, improve the soil structure and even break down toxin and contaminants.

Pangea Organics approached Soil Health Solutions in Boulder, after seeing their products at the Organic Zone cart on the Pearl Street Mall. All three companies share a similar vision – healthy products and a healthy planet. Like Pangea, SHS’s mission is to create holistic and sustainable natural products that are of the highest quality and that foster an awareness of caring for the earth.

The Bountea system is being used by municipalities to stop dependence on chemicals and reduce watering, as well as by organic gardeners, farmers and horticulturalists across the country. In Ireland, John Evans is working to change grass production methods so that the cows will again produce milk full of nutrition.

SHS is providing liquid Bountea Compost Tea for Pangea’s Organic Educational Garden. Together the two companies intend to help community members enjoy and reap the extraordinary benefits of sustainable organic gardening.
